Jeremiah 37: 12: “Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go unto the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people”
” . . . to separate himself in the midst of the people.”
The preceding scripture is in the Bible for a reason. Jeremiah warned and warned Israel about the sins of that nation. He said that Babylon was going to invade Israel and capture Jerusalem (Jeremiah 37: 7-10). National repentance for sin was not going to prevent the Lord from judging Israel.
After crying out and shedding many tears for the sins of Israel, Jeremiah separated himself in the sight of the people as a testimony against Israel. Jeremiah was shaking the dust from his sandals, so to speak. He was done with Israel.
The life of the prophet IS the warning. The life of a Christian IS the sermon, IS the witness. Of course, the words of a prophet—spoken or written—are also very powerful. If the Lord told Jeremiah to separate himself in the midst of the people, it looks to me that his ministry of warning Israel was coming to an end.
Jeremiah 37: 15-17: “Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah, and smote him, and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe: for they had made that the prison. When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days; Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”
