The Brook Kidron

“And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness”
2 Samuel 15:23

There are places referred to in the scriptures that represent to us experiences with which we can identify in our own walk. Ziklag, Peniel, Mount Moriah and many other locations speak to us of deep and heart felt experiences through which we must pass. Those places our fore fathers walked through by faith will be ours if we too walk in same path of faith. What was true then must also be true now.

David and the Brook Kidron

It was a very dark night and one filled with great distress for King David and his loyal friends. Absalom, through treachery and political intrigue, had risen to power and was now seeking David’s life. David had been warned of the betrayal and had to run for his life into the wilderness. Friends, associates and family had betrayed him and were now conspiring to take his life. At this juncture David weeping crosses over the brook Kidron. Kidron* in the Hebrew means darkness, turbulence, great agitation and great evil. It was a brook that flowed into the Dead Sea. It is a brook which must be crossed over, where the deep lessons of God’s faithfulness, His steadfastness and His mercy become the very core of our hope. It is here we are weaned from dependence upon others and God Himself becomes our friend and salvation.

Kidron represents the shattering of our self-reliance and strength, our allegiance to other things. It is the doorway into a new wilderness experience which is quite different from the others in which we have walked. New testings and new sorrows must bring us into new places of faith and reliance upon God. The processing of our God is thorough and effectual. What others mean for evil God makes for our good. The trial known here is more painful and heart-rending as it is not one which comes to us from foes without but from friends within the family of God. Later on in the Psalms David speaks of these deep and agonizing experiences:

“For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company”
Psalm 55:12-14

Jesus and the Brook Kidron

Over a thousand years later we see Jesus crossing this same dark brook as He also was being betrayed: by Judas.

“When Jesus had spoken these words,
he went forth with his disciples
over the brook Cedron (Kidron)…”
John 18:1

The final drama of Jesus life was unfolding. Judas had gone to the religious leaders of that day and obtained a “band of men” to come and take Jesus by force unto the Chief priests.

“When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons”
John 18:1-3

It is important to note that not only did Jesus cross over this dark and turbulent brook but so did His disciples. Think it not strange that the servant is to follow in the same path as the Master. It is in following Him that we become molded and shaped by the experiences of life to overcome as He overcame; to find the healing and sweetness of His life rising in our own. It is the bitter experiences that free us from our own bitterness.

The Brook Kidron is one of the most important crucibles we will face in our lives. The enemy of our soul has orchestrated it for our destruction; God allows it for our good.

The great danger with any bitter experience is that we allow it to linger and to fester. This incapacitates us from living and blossoming in the goodness of God. The three Hebrew men thrown into the fire emerged from it with no trace of smoke upon their garments. God’s design is for us to walk through this excruciating experience with no hint of the bitterness remaining.

God’s determination for the painful lessons of the Brook Kidron is for us to become sweet. Do not fear when these waters arise and would drive you into the wilderness, for God, even thy God shall prove thee and work in thee the wonder and the sweetness of Jesus Himself…

“Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke,
perfumed with myrrh and frankincense,
with all powders of the merchant?”
Song of Songs 3:6

The good news is we will never cross this brook alone.

“…he (Jesus) went forth with his disciples
over the brook Cedron”

* Note: Jones’ Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names translates Kidron: Very Black, Full of Darkness.

The brook Kidron is mentioned as the extent of Shimei’s confinement, the one who cursed David in this dark place of betrayal. How fitting was his judgement that when he crosses the Kidron, Solomon has him executed (1 Kings 2:36-46).

And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be collected to one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. And God called the dry land, Earth. And He called the collection of the waters, Seas. And God saw that it was good.
Genesis 1:9-10

God’s work in separating our waters from His (see previous article) brings upon us the ability and thereby also the responsibility to subdue our own raging waters, so that we as the instruments of His will might not hinder the continued work of His Spirit in and through us.

Excerpt from previous section:
“The new creature which submits itself to the word continues discovering the evidence of even greater depths in God far above its present experiential knowledge; thirsting always to drink deeper of that eternal spring so that even the waters of earth below might be made conformable to the word of His mouth…”

“Let the waters under the heavens be collected to one place.” – It is a grave mistake to suppose that just because God has separated our earthly waters from His heavenly ones, He wants nothing to do with them. Truly, He wants to be the only One to do with them: they must also become His waters, for unto His glory they are created. But this can only occur to the degree that we ourselves give them up unto His designs – such obedience is our responsibility. It is by the allowance of His increase within us that we ourselves decrease. There is a purpose for our waters, and it is for a very particular and focused calling, hence the gathering of them into“ONE place.” This represents the specific calling of every creature in Him, whatever that may be for each one. For once having partaken of His waters, in drinking more of Him we find greater power to conform our own waters according to His calling.

Subsequent to the second day’s obedience of the dividing of the waters, the third day’s work is revealed in discipline of our unruly waters by the word of His mouth: “Let dry land appear.” This now establishes His solid ground within us, raising up the humbled earthen creature to bear fruit of the Spirit of the Lord…

And God said, “Let the earth sprout tender sprouts, the plant seeding seed, the fruit tree producing fruit according to its kind, whichever seed is in it on the earth.” And it was so.
Genesis 1:11

The planting of God produces various fruits according to the measure of grace given it, which also produce fruit after its own kind. Just as a tree yields others of its kind after itself, so also the fruitful Christian plants the seeds of their Godly virtues in the soil of another’s heart. It is on this third day, after the dry land appears, that the inward work of the Spirit is becoming outwardly evident. Just as the dove later sent from Noah sought out dry new ground, and did not settle until such was found; so also the Spirit of the Lord ever seeks within us the hidden ground in which His roots can spread deeply to support His fruit above, according to the calling with which we have been called.

And the earth bore tender sprouts, the plant seeding seed according to its kind, and the fruit tree producing fruit according to its kind, whichever seed is in it. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning the third day.
Genesis 1:12-13

The third day initiates growth in God: it is the day of resurrection which brings up a fruitful harvest through the dying of former things; so that the coming days might become fully lighted by the sun from within the creation, and even the darkness of each night season be kept lit by that hope of the Day of Christ burning within them as a candle.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal.
John 12:24-25

A Christian lady named Nita gave me a ride from Kooskia to Grangeville, Idaho earlier today.  She told me that Las Vegas has the biggest school for witches and warlocks in the United States.

I told Nita that I have hitchhiked through Las Vegas several times over the years.  The last time I hitchhiked through Las Vegas was back in December of 2005.  At that time, I told the Lord that I hated Las Vegas and asked that He never have me hitchhike through that city again.  In 2006, I had a dream about a Las Vegas earthquake.

Nita told me that dogs can sense an earthquake before it happens.  She had a dog that knew an earthquake was going to happen in 1971, when she was living in Southern California.  In 1994, her dog sensed the Northridge Earthquake before it happened.  She lived in Southern California for a number of years before she moved to Idaho.

Ezekiel 21: 27-32:  “I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him. And thou, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering:  Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end.  Shall I cause it to return into his sheath? I will judge thee in the place where thou wast created, in the land of thy nativity.   And I will pour out mine indignation upon thee, I will blow against thee in the fire of my wrath, and deliver thee into the hand of brutish men, and skilful to destroy.   Thou shalt be for fuel to the fire; thy blood shall be in the midst of the land; thou shalt be no more remembered: for I the LORD have spoken it.”

Last night I had a dream where I was reading a newspaper. Inside the newspaper I saw this ad. The ad said, “las vegas earthquake”.

Evenings are family time so don’t normally blog or go online, but today have opportunity to publish previous post on Brexit. I’ve been working at it on and off all day regarding Archbishop Justin Welby’s divisive remarks on it and decided to blog on that tomorrow.
